Weston Cemetery is a beautiful traditional cemetery with burials facing east and monuments (headstones) being allowed and encouraged. Weston Cemetery is bordered by Brookside Park to the north and Iroquois River to the south. The south portion of Weston Cemetery has approximately 7700 burials. In 2002, 8400 burial spaces were created with its 16 acre "North Addition". This addition increased the overall land mass of the cemetery to 42 acres, with an overall burial capacity at around 17,000 spaces.
Through the generous purchases and gifts, Weston Cemetery has been able to grow to the size it is today.
Steeped in local history, Weston Cemetery is the third oldest cemetery of the 58 recorded cemeteries within the boundaries of Jasper County, Indiana. It's first burial occurred on Wednesday, August 24, 1842. The landowner of the original section of the cemetery, Dr. Henry Weston, who was the son-in-law of the eventual city's namesake, gave the land to the City of Rensselaer in 1868. When the city platted the cemetery, in 1873, there were already 200 burials recorded. When L.A. Bostwick platted the oldest, un-platted section of the cemetery, his records displayed there were 25 burials in the 1840's, 93 burials in the 1850's. 82 burials in the 1860's and 14 burials in the 1870's. It was suspected there were many more burials not calculated in this finding, due to no dates on the burial markers, or no markers at all.
Weston Cemetery is the final resting place for over 700 veterans. Veteran burials encompass all wars beginning with the War of 1812. In Section A, of the old section, there is a row of Civil War veterans, which cemetery employees often refer to as "Civil War Row". The military ranks of those within Weston Cemetery include two Generals, Privates, Airmen and Seamen. A former Majority/Minority Leader of the Congressional House of Representatives has also been laid to rest within the cemetery.
Each year, Weston Cemetery conducts Memorial Day and Veteran Day ceremonies next to its Veteran's Monument, located in the "North Addition".
Weston Cemetery employees are a caring workforce who take pride in the cemetery appearance and work diligently to ensure that all aspects of operations are observed. While employees are responsible for burials, lot sales, groundskeeping, maintenance and complying with City Ordinances, they also further assist with genealogical research and gravesite location. Maps of the cemetery are available on the city's website and the Weston Cemetery Office.
Weston Cemetery welcomes all to enjoy the tranquility and outdoor scenery surrounding the paved walking paths. Benches, assessable water spickets and trash receptacles are available for your convenience.
