BUDGET BILLING
The City of Rensselaer offers different programs to help people with their utility bills. Budget billing is offered to residential customers who have resided in the same location for at least one (1) year and have not been disconnected due to delinquency. The budget plan allows customers to pay a fixed amount each month. The payment amount is based upon their previous 12 month average. The program runs from August through July. Contract sign up is in July. Please ask the utility office for more details.
NORTHWEST INDIANA COMMUNITY CORP
Another plan the city participates in is the Northwest Indiana Community Corporation (N.W.C.A.) LIHEP Program. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEP) helps pay the winter heating bills or summer cooling bills of low income and elderly people. This program is offered through Jasper County Community Services. Upon approval of the application, the program provides funds to be used towards electric and/or gas bills from November 1st to May 30th. For additional information, contact the Jasper County Community Services at 219-866-8071.
PRIORITY SERVICE
The city has a priority service program for those who require electricity for medical reasons. All you need to do is furnish us with a request for priority service form completed by your doctor. You will be given priority electric service during any major power outages and your residence will be properly identified by the electric utility.
GETTING ASSISTANCE - UNABLE TO PAY YOUR UTILITY BILL
If you are unable to pay your bill, contact the utility office at 219-866-7884.
We allow one (1) extension per month. In order to receive the extension, come into the office and complete a payment agreement. We can also direct you to community assistance agencies who are able to assist you in some circumstances (Rensselaer Ministerial Association, Jasper County Community Services, Township Trustee, and Salvation Army).
DISCONNECTED FOR DELINQUENCY
If you are disconnected for delinquency, come into the utility office and bring your bill up to date. As per ordinance 01-2008, all billed charges plus the $25.00 reconnect fee per utility disconnected will need to be paid in full in order to have service restored. The payment has to be made in cash or by credit card. The after hours reconnect fee increases after 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday or on weekends to $100.00 per utility disconnected.
