Training

In 2001, the Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department (RVFD) added a Live Fire training facility located at the corner of Oak and Weston Streets.  This unique training facility is a building capable of handling live burns, where firefighters can get first-hand experience of Live Fire training, but in a safe and controlled atmosphere.

This facility is also available for use by surrounding fire departments as well.

Much of the training is based on State and Federal requirements and to meet these requirements, training must remain constant.  Larger training exercises which include other departments, are sometimes held on Saturdays.  In conjunction with the Jasper County Office of Emergency Management, and/or the Local Area Planning Committee (LEPC), unannounced large scale disaster training is also provided, usually once annually.
In the fall of 2017, RVFD expanded its training to a facility located behind the fire station. The facility includes a two-story residential-like structure that is used for multiple fire and police activities. The site includes a forceful entry way, propane fire area and extrication areas - to name a few.
In 2023 Govenor Holcomb announced hub and spoke next level training program, in which the Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department was awarded a five-story live fire training tower, making Rensselaer one of the regional training facilities.
