Founded in 1896 and once housed in what is now City Hall's Clerk - Treasurer's Office, the Department is one of Indiana's oldest continuously running Volunteer Fire Departments.
RVFD is located at 1060 W Clark Street, conveniently located to both the city and the I-65 corridor. The location is key to its response time since it is also responsible for 30 miles of I-65 and 15 miles of CSX Transportations railway.
The Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department (RVFD) and the Marion Township Fire Department are separate entities. We have partnered to provide fire services to both the city and township, adding an additional population of 6,000 - 7,000 residents to serve - with a total of approximately 12,000 residents.
Rensselaer encompasses a 6-7 square mile are and with the township, the department services an additional 232 square mile area.
