Rensselaer's Municipal Electric Utility is considered a large industry for our community.  We strive to keep our rates low, while providing reliable and efficient power.

"Special Ordinance" No. 14 was written and passed on September 17, 1897, authorizing and empowering the City of Rensselaer to construct, maintain and operate an electric light system for the purpose of supplying electricity to the city.

The passing of this ordinance was the beginning of a municipality to serve the inhabitants of the city.  Over 100 years later, the Electric Utility consists of three sub departments and an administrative office.

Each of these departments play a vital role with the utility to supply low cost, efficient, reliable power to the utility's customers.

The City of Rensselaer is a full purchasing member of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency "IMPA".  IMPA is a statewide agency formed to provide reliable low-cost electricity to municipal electric systems like Rensselaer.

The Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department (RVFD) was founded in 1896 and was housed in what is now the City of Rensselaer's Clerk-Treasurer's Office, the department is one of the oldest, continually operating Volunteer Fire Departments in the state of Indiana.  In the 1950's, the Rensselaer Fire Department combined services with the Marion Township Fire Department to provide more efficient coverages for all residents. RVFD is located at 1060 W Clark Street, conveniently located to both the city and the I-65 corridor. The location is key to its response time since it is also responsible for 30 miles of I-65 and 15 miles of CSX Transportations railway.

In 2003, the City of Rensselaer Fire Department joined with the Keener, Remington and Wheatfield Fire Departments, to form the Jasper County Firefighters Association.  This association was formed so that all of the departments could work more closely together to provide better coverage to all of Jasper County. The Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department and the Marion Township Fire Department are separate entities. We have partnered to provide fire services to both the city and township, adding an additional population of 6,000 - 7,000 residents to serve - with a total of approximately 12,000 residents. Rensselaer encompasses a 6-7 square mile are and with the township, the department services an additional 232 square mile area.

In 2005 this association, with the generous financial support of businesses and individuals, purchased a state-of-the-art Fire and Severe Weather Safety Trailer.  This trailer contains the necessary functionality to simulate a fire, as well as severe weather conditions, in a controlled atmosphere.  Used as various functions throughout Jasper County, this trailer provides a valuable means for training both children and adults, alike.

We pledge to maintain a well-trained workforce, who are able to respond quickly to the needs of our customers.
Safety and training for hand-in-hand.  The City of Rensselaer accomplishes this with continual training and testing courses.  Classroom and field exercises are required of all employees, both hands-on and written exams are utilized.  Each employee is evaluated on each task periodically, or as regulation dictates.

The Gas Department is equipped to handle all phases of supplying natural gas to its customers.  The Gas Department has the equipment to bore under roads, trench for installations and also has a vacuum excavator truck to use in confined spaces.

Entrance to Weston Cemetery

Weston Cemetery is a beautiful traditional cemetery with burials facing east and monuments (headstones) being allowed and encouraged. Weston Cemetery is bordered by Brookside Park to the north and Iroquois River to the south. The south portion of Weston Cemetery has approximately 7700 burials. In 2002, 8400 burial spaces were created with its 16 acre "North Addition". This addition increased the overall land mass of the cemetery to 42 acres, with an overall burial capacity at around 17,000 spaces.

Through the generous purchases and gifts, Weston Cemetery has been able to grow to the size it is today.

Steeped in local history, Weston Cemetery is the third oldest cemetery of the 58 recorded cemeteries within the boundaries of Jasper County, Indiana. It's first burial occurred on Wednesday, August 24, 1842. The landowner of the original section of the cemetery, Dr. Henry Weston, who was the son-in-law of the eventual city's namesake, gave the land to the City of Rensselaer in 1868. When the city platted the cemetery, in 1873, there were already 200 burials recorded. When L.A. Bostwick platted the oldest, un-platted section of the cemetery, his records displayed there were 25 burials in the 1840's, 93 burials in the 1850's. 82 burials in the 1860's and 14 burials in the 1870's.  It was suspected there were many more burials not calculated in this finding, due to no dates on the burial markers, or no markers at all.

Weston Cemetery is the final resting place for over 700 veterans.  Veteran burials encompass all wars beginning with the War of 1812. In Section A, of the old section, there is a row of Civil War veterans, which cemetery employees often refer to as "Civil War Row". The military ranks of those within Weston Cemetery include two Generals, Privates, Airmen and Seamen. A former Majority/Minority Leader of the Congressional House of Representatives has also been laid to rest within the cemetery.

Each year, Weston Cemetery conducts Memorial Day and Veteran Day ceremonies next to its Veteran's Monument, located in the "North Addition".

Weston Cemetery employees are a caring workforce who take pride in the cemetery appearance and work diligently to ensure that all aspects of operations are observed. While employees are responsible for burials, lot sales, groundskeeping, maintenance and complying with City Ordinances, they also further assist with genealogical research and gravesite location. Maps of the cemetery are available on the city's website and the Weston Cemetery Office.

Weston Cemetery welcomes all to enjoy the tranquility and outdoor scenery surrounding the paved walking paths. Benches, assessable water spickets and trash receptacles are available for your convenience.
